The Scientists' Society of Southwest Florida has donated $3,000 to the Edison College Foundation. The funds will be used for science scholarships at the college.
Since 1995, the society has contributed more than $30,000 to Edison. These cont
ributions are doubled thanks to the Dr. Phillip Benjamin Matching Program through the state of Florida. The most recent donation increases this scholarship fund to more than $45,000, which provides scholarships to two students each year.
The Scientists' Society and Edison College have a long history. Dr. Howard Kane, a professor at Edison College, started the Scientists' Society in 1976. The mission of the group is to advance the profession of science. This happens in two ways: by involving young students in the study of sciences vocationally, professionally, and culturally; and by providing continuing education and knowledge refreshment for science professors through lectures and discussion groups.
The Edison College Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation chartered under Florida Statutes to serve as a direct support organization of Edison College. The Foundation promotes higher education in general, and specifically encourages the advancement of teaching and instructional services, student scholarships, and support for the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall. For more information about the Edison College Foundation, contact Tracey Galloway 489-9210.
