MUSIC SCENE Ween MUSIC REVIEWED BY BOB JONES

A new Ween record is like a sampler from Norman Love Confections. You may not know what you are biting into but each piece is crafted to perfection and each can be so different it is hard to believe that it came from the same box. This holds true for La Cucaracha. First of all, vocalist Gean Ween is the man with a thousand voices, he can mimic other singers down to a T as well as having a huge bag of his own. The common thread running through this disc is relationships, "Lullaby" has Gene crooning a genuine love lullaby with a harp and piano backing him up while "Object" is a jaded mid-tempo song where he sings "You're just an object to me… just a piece of meat." Then there is the downright un-politically correct, vulgar, raunchy "With My Own Bare Hands" sung by guitarist Dean Ween where he sings about things not fit to print in this paper. There is also a Roger Miller sounding country number called "Learnin' to Love." Reggae is also represented with "The Fruit Man." Gene sounds amazingly like Fort Myers music legend Doug Davison in "Shamemaker." Ween has always pushed the limits with lyrics that can be disturbing and offensive all in the name of free speech. Over the last twenty years they have proven to be one of the most creative and consistently inconsistent groups in popular music. La Cucaracha is a tasty treat.
