Edison & Ford offers many events this month

October events at the Edison & Ford winter Estates:

Painting Floorcloths with Leoma Lovegrove, Oct. 20 and 27, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. - Renowned Florida artist, Leoma Lovegrove will teach a variety of techniques using brushes, sponges and Estates botanicals even the most inexperienced painter can create a one of a kind floorcloth. Registration required. Estates Members, $50; non-members $60. A material list will be provided upon registration.

Growing Roses in Containers, October 20 at 10 a.m. - Gardeners will learn which roses grow best in southwest Florida's hot and humid conditions with special attention to the techniques to grow them in containers or pots much as Mina Edison did a century ago. The program will include both contemporary hybrid types as well as antique rose varieties. The workshop will be led by Estates horticulturist, Debbie Hughes who will be joined by, Barbara Oehlbeck, noted rose authority and author of "For the Love of Roses" and other horticulture books. Registration required. Estates Members, $20; non-members $25.

Wild Wizard Lab Show "Invent-It," Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. - The Super and Junior Scientists present a series of wild lab experiments exploring some of Mr. Edison's and Mr. Ford's illuminating inventions. Join the Scientists and discover the secrets of Edison's Invention Factory and the origin of the scientific method. Fun for all ages. Admission for Estates Members is free, nonmembers $10 adults, $5 children.

Architecture & Restoration Behind the Scenes of the Estates, Oct. 25 at 9 a.m. - Participants will discover the history of the Estates, a glimpse of the private lives of the Edison's and Fords; explore the newly restored Edison buildings and much more. Estates restoration experts will lead participants on a behind the scenes tour of the nearly $10 million restoration of the Edison buildings, while "Mr. Edison" and "Mrs. Ford" will take visitors on a tour of their homes. Lectures, tours, lunch, and refreshments, as well as individual exploration of the grounds are included. Cost is $87. Estates Volunteer Harvest Party, Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. - Join Estates volunteers and prospective volunteers for an afternoon of fun and excitement on the Edison Caretaker's House lawn. Participants are asked to wear their favorite mask. Music and refreshments will be provided.

The Estates is daily from 9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. The Estates is an official project of "Save America's Treasures" at the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a Florida Historic Landmark and a National Register Historic Site.
