A groundbreaking ceremony for the new Southwest Florida Enterprise Center will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 16 at 3901 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. The $4.1 million project involves construction of a new 40,000 square foot business incubator on the land behind the current SWFEC. Originally called the Business Development Center, the SWFEC has been providing affordable rental real estate and on site technical assistance for startup businesses since 1988.
In April 2006, the Economic Development Agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce awarded the City of Fort Myers a $1.5 million grant for the new SWFEC facilities. It was the second largest EDA grant in Florida in the past 10 years. The City of Fort Myers committed $2.6 million to complete the project, which will offer business incubation clients new, expanded and updated facilities totaling nearly four times that of the original facility. The new facilities will include bays ranging from 1,120 to 1,600 square feet, 15 offices, two conference rooms, a media center, computer lab and a meeting room for up to 50 people.
The project is expected to be complete in July 2008.
