"Ding" Darling lecture series kicks off this month
Sea turtle study first in series on Sanibel
SPECIAL TO FLORIDA WEEKLY
The
Man Who Saved Sea Turtles: Archie Carr and the Origins of Conservation Biology
by Frederick "Fritz" Davis revolves around the work of the man credited with
raising awareness for the endangered sea turtle. Florida's Archie Carr National
Wildlife Refuge near Sebastian Inlet pays homage to the important naturalist and writer.
The son of Sanibel residents Judy and Dan Davis, "Fritz" Davis will talk about his book, which uses Carr as the focal point of his study on early conservation biology, at a special lecture at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10, at the "Ding" Darling Education Center.
An avid, lifelong naturalist, he studied the history of science at Harvard, the University of Florida, and Yale, where he completed his doctorate. Currently, he is assistant professor of history at Florida State University. Following his presentation, Davis will sign copies of his book, which is available for purchase in the "Ding" Darling Bookstore.
Admission
is free to the event, which is sponsored by the "Ding" Darling Wildlife Society,
the refuge¿s non-profit "friends" organization, as part of its 12-week Thursday
Afternoon Lecture Series. Seating is limited and available on a first-come
basis. For more information, or to become a friend of the refuge, call 472-1100
