In The Future

"In The Future" is the name of the new Black Mountain record but it could very well have been called in the past. The first tune, "Stormy High," really sets the mood for the record with its Black Sabbath/Deep Purple-ish heavy minor key blast. For the most part Black Mountain draws from metal and psych bands of late sixties and seventies. "Bright Lights" clocks in at just under seventeen minutes long filled with vintage synths and heavy guitars making it a borderline prog-rock tune that could almost fill one side of a vinyl record. The stripped down acoustic song "Stay Free," featured on the Spiderman 3 soundtrack, is drenched in reverb that make the guitar, tambourine and vocals sound very much like the Harvard University band Galaxie 500 (who borrowed a drum set from classmate Conan O'Brien when they got their start.) Although no new ground has truly been broken on "In The Future" it is a great listen, especially if you reach for the volume knob on your radio to crack up "War Pigs" and long for the days of hard rock and muscle cars.
