Edison students earn academic awards

The Florida Department of Education has honored three Edison College students by naming them to the 2008 All-Florida Academic Team.

Mariamo Oyebanjo, Fort Myers, is among 30 students from across the state to be named to the first team. Karla Dias, Cape Coral, and Tyler Sheehan, Port Charlotte, are among 74 students named to the second team.

The 104 students were nominated for their academic excellence by the public and private community colleges as part of the 2008 All-USA Community and Junior College Academic Team program. They received Phi Thet Kappa medallions at an event in Tallahassee on Tuesday, April 15.

"I wish to congratulate Ms. Oyebanjo, Ms. Dias and Mr. Sheehan on their academic achievements and leadership abilities which led to this distinction," said Edison College District President Kenneth P. Walker.

Oyebanjo graduated from Edison College in December with an associate in arts degree and concentration in science. Dias, who plans to major in engineering, serves as secretary for Lee Campus Phi Theta Kappa and is the legislative vice-president for the campus Student Government Association. Sheehan, scheduled to graduate this May with his AA degree, will transfer to the University of South Florida to pursue his engineering degree.

The All-USA Academic team for Community Colleges competition is sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, the American Association of Community Colleges, and USA TODAY to recognize scholarly achievements and leadership accomplishments of students enrolled in community, technical and junior colleges.
